curate replied to your photo: New desk!  Saved up a long time for this one. fabulous fabric color on that chair. eames? red is a good desk color. Thanks!  It’s an eames knockoff from Target, which they sell in pistachio.  The official color of the desk is watermelon, which makes me like the green-red combo even more.

Hadden’s Slave Patrols: Law and Violence in Virginia and the Carolinas, which is about the formation of patrol units to police, discipline, and regulate fugitive or fleeing slaves in these states.  Already within the first couple of pages there is already a wealth of important information.  Just some tidbits: “Some have seen patrols as merely...

“I saw a paragraph, a few years since, in a South Carolina paper, which, speaking of the barbarity of the Turks, it said: “The Turks are the most barbarous people in the world—they treat the Greeks more like brutes than human beings.”   And in the same paper was an advertisement, which said: “Eight well built Virginia and Maryland Negro fellows and four wenches will...

curate: AMY GOODMAN: And if you’re teaching young economists, the principles you would teach them, what they’d be? MANFRED MAX-NEEF: The principles, you know, of an economics which should be are based in five postulates and one fundamental value principle. One, the economy is to serve the people and not the people to serve the economy. Two, development is about people and not about...

“The question whether an Obama-era Democratic Party may offer opportunities for labor and left-of-center political interests presumes that Obama’s Democratic Party offers potential for significant departure from the rightward tacking we’ve seen since Bill Clinton’s presidency. There is little in anything Obama’s said or done to warrant such a presumption.  Throughout his career, Obama has...

…there are precious few women friends who won’t judge or chastise you (a black woman) for not being strong. Or, who won’t attempt to encourage you (a black woman) by reminding you that as a black woman, YOU ARE STRONG.  And while I have my moments of fortitude, there are far more moments of pain. There is a problem when we (little black girls) are taught to be strong from an early age and...
