jeanthesecond-deactivated201201 asked: oy, trolling for reading inspiration here, so what 5 ( or 10 or 3) books do you think I should get into? Any kind- fiction, nonfiction whatever, whatever.

I love questions like this.  First, in the fiction/biographical area:

  1. Zoe Wicomb, David’s Story
  2. Frank Wilderson, Incognegro: A Memoir
  3. Amos Tutuola, The Palm Wine Drinkard
  4. Marta Traba, Mothers and Shadows
  5. George Lamming - In the Castle of My Skin

Everyone these days is telling me I need to read Ian Baucom’s Specters of the Atlantic: Finance Capital, Slavery, and the Philosophy of History.  In terms of books that I’d find myself repeatedly recommending, the following are almost among them.

  1. Elaine Brown - The Emancipation of Little B
  2. Avery Gordon - Ghostly Matters
  3. Édouard Glissant - Poetics of Relation
  4. Robert Reid-Pharr - Once You Go Black
  5. Elaine Scarry - The Body in Pain
  6. Johannes Fabian - Time and the Other

If you get to read any of these, would love to know what you think.
