Also, when I say “edit the fuck out of this chapter,” I don’t just mean it figuratively. I started getting annoyed at the fact that Lee Edelman is the only academic that I’ve seen drop the f-bomb in publication. I mean, when you’re reading some of the shit I’m reading, I feel like even though the principled response begins with the one that’s in the gut, the gut-response’s entrance into language is what I filter out the most. So in the drafts that I’m writing myself, before I share them with writing groups and/or advisors, I’ll do something like quote John Burgess:
“[t]he claim that there is nothing in the color of the skin from the point of view of political ethics is a great sophism. A black skin means membership in a race of men which has never of itself succeeded in subjecting passion to reason, has never, therefore, created any civilization of any kind
And follow that with a sentence like, “The first thing to note about this is, really, what the fuck?!”
All to say that yes, I shall indeed be editing the fuck(s) out of my chapter.

I’m incredibly fortunate in that I could leave the fucks in drafts for my advisor; he’d tell me to take them out of course, but he’d appreciate them.
