Just tweeted it; might as well post it.
I’m thinking about this XXL controversy and wondering how possible it is to critique the sexual objectification of black women without, at the same time, sliding into a conservative discourse about sex and sexuality, and especially without relying on the most conservative anxieties about black girls’ and women’s sexuality. We play into that, of course, whenever we reaffirm the patriarchal imperative to protect “our daughters,” an imperative which equates black female sexuality with the erosion of the black community. The very discourse that says that black girls need to be saved is the same discourse that turns black female sexuality an object of blame. Point is, in short, we need to fight just as hard to create a non-pathologized, sex- and pleasure-positive discourse on sex as we do against sexual objectification. (And preferably one that frees sexual expressions from having to be freighted with five centuries of oppression.) Otherwise, the fight against one expression of patriarchy will reinscribe, even authorize, another, equally pernicious one.

This. We have a very bad mentality about black women’s sexuality, and that needs to be fixed. But I have to ask, is it...
