The strategy of wielding sarcasm as if it were simply a convenient tool to crack the veneer of reality failed me precisely at the moment when sarcasm actually became the veneer through which my relationship to the world was mediated.
At that point—which probably wasn’t as much an easily identifiable moment in time as it was that constantly repeating occasion in which the ground moves, imperceptibly, beneath me—sarcasm no longer served me; I ended up serving, through the use of sarcasm, the very attitudes necessary to reproduce the reality that I wanted to destroy. Congratulations?
