november 19th was the transgender day of remembrance. this year there are 160 more deaths to mourn than there were last year. being killed for being trans is so horrific i hardly know what to say about it, except that there are many many more responsible than the killers themselves. these crimes are compounded by police departments whose attitudes towards trans victims range from disinterested to actively hostile, by juries who accept defenses that say that being trans is an inherent deception to which violence is an acceptable response, all the way to every “tranny” joke told that reinforces assumptions that trans people are lesser or other.
