Not to be all “good-old-days”—because songs and videos like this one were certainly not the norm in 1996, when it came out—but remember when mainstream hip-hop artists seemed to feel a responsiblity to speak directly to the material conditions in which people lived? When I listened to that new Clipse song the other day where Malice says “it’s a blessin’/to spend a hundred thou in a recession/with no second guessin,’” I just shook my head. Rap is so wack nowadays.
